The Events at Sandy Hook Elementary Los Eventos en la Escuela Sandy Hook 

I cannot even begin to express my sadness, horror and grief over the events that took place in Ct. I can only imagine what those teachers and children must have gone through.  The faculty and staff were prepared and did all they could to protect their "babies" just as we would have.  My heart and prayers go out to the families, students, faculty and staff of Sandy Hook.  A dedicated and devoted Principal and brave courageous teachers lost their lives in a senseless act of evil.  I spent most of this weekend as I am sure many other principal's did thinking about our safety plans and fine-tuning them to see if there is anything more we can do to keep our kids safe.  Our Lock Down Drills are very important as are all our drills.  Dr. Martin has posted some resources on the WSFCS District page to offer tips on how to talk with children and offer support to all of us.  We do have counselors and resources available if you need them.

No se cómo comenzar a expresar mi tristeza, horror y dolor por los eventos que tuvieron lugar en Connecticut. Sólo puedo imaginar lo que esos maestros y niños tuvieron que pasar. Los profesores y empleados estaban  preparados e hicieron todo lo que pudieron para proteger  sus “bebés,” así como lo hubiéramos hecho nosotros. Mi corazón y mis oraciones están con  las familias, estudiantes, profesores y personal de Sandy Hook. Una directora dedicada,  llena de coraje y maestros  valientes murieron en este acto sin sentido. Yo estuve la mayor parte de mi fin de semana, como estoy segura lo estuvieron muchos otros Directores, pensando en los planes de seguridad y el cumplimiento de los mismos para ver si hay algo más que podamos hacer para mantener a los niños seguros. Nuestros simulacros de Confinamiento (cierre de la escuela)  son tan  importantes como los demás. El Dr. Martin ha puesto en la página web del Distrito unos artículos que nos  ofrecen claves sobre cómo hablar con los niños y ofrecerles ayuda. Nosotros tenemos consejeros  y  otros recursos disponibles si ustedes los necesitan.

We are very proud of Julissa and thank her for all of her contributions to Diggs-Latham Elementary School. She is a teacher leader and an advocate for all students. She truly cares about our students and their families.  Julissa will represent us at the District Level.  Congratulations are in order as well to our two other incredible nominees, Shakila Faqih and Brooke Hough.  These ladies are phenomenal teachers who are passionate about what they do.  They believe in children and work tirelessly to create environments in which their students flourish.  We are proud of all of these ladies.

Estamos muy orgullosos de Julissa y le agradecemos todas sus contribuciones a la escuela Diggs Latham Elementary. Ella es una maestra líder que aboga por todos los estudiantes y verdaderamente se preocupa por ellos  y por  sus familias. Julissa nos representará a nivel del Distrito. Felicitaciones también a las otras dos maestras nominadas, Shakila Faqih y Brooke Hough. Estas señoras son maestras fenomenales, apasionadas por lo que hacen. Spelling Bee Contest        On Dec 3^rd, 4^th & 5^th we will have the contest in the classrooms.                         on Dec 14^th we will have the assembly in the Gym.

Holiday Musical               We will have The Nutcracker performance on Dec 13 at 7.00 pm.

Please Note: The first 150 families at the 7.00 pm performance will get a ticket to turn in for a holiday surprise, donated by Home Moravian Church. One ticket per family.

A Very Busy Week-October 8-13th, 2012 Una Semana Muy Ocupada Octubre 8-13

Welcome to a Brand New Week.  This will be a busy one for students and staff alike.  I am going to list some important information for you.

• There will be ITBS testing for all kindergarteners so please make sure children get to bed early and eat a good breakfast.
• Los estudiantes de kindergarten tendrán exámenes ITBS. Por favor hagan que los niños se vayan a la cama temprano y desayunen bien.
• The Book Fair will be up and running in the Media Center all week.
• La Feria del Libro estará abierta en el Centro de Medios toda la semana.
• 4th and 5th grade students will have a short assembly, "Brass Ensemble" on Thursday at 10:15.  Afterwards, Wake Forest Science Mentors will be here to talk to kids about the Science Fair and how they can get help.  They will help your  children for free; they will also be here at a table on Fall Festival Night so stop and see them.  Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.  Science Fair projects are mandated for fifth graders and strongly encouraged for grades 3 and 4.  Grades pre-k to 2 are encouraged to do a class project.
• Los estudiantes de 4 y 5 grados tendrán una reunión “Brass Ensemble” el jueves a las 10.15. Después de ésta, los Mentores de Ciencias de Wake Fores estarán aquí para hablarles a los niños sobre la Feria de las Ciencias y cómo ellos pueden ayudarlos. Ellos ayudarán a los niños en forma gratuita. Los Mentores  también tendrán una mesa en la noche del Festival de Otoño, así que hablen con ellos. Aprovechen esta magnífica oportunidad. Los proyectos para la Feria de las Ciencias son obligatorios para los estudiantes del grado 5 y les pedimos a los estudiantes de 3 y 4 que los hagan también. Les pedimos a los estudiantes de pre-K a 2 que hagan un proyecto por clase.
• Fall Festival will be this Friday night from 5:30-7:30. Wear a multi-cultural costume or a Halloween Costume if you wish.  Our PTA still needs you to join.  They will be taking orders for Diggs-Latham T-Shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.  Get one for your child and yourself and show your Diggs-Latham Spirit!!
• El Festival de Otoño será este viernes 12 de 5.30 a 7.30 pm. Si lo desean, usen vestidos de sus países o disfraces de Halloween. Nuestra PTA todavía necesita que ustedes se afilien. Ellos también están recibiendo órdenes para playeras y sudaderas  con o sin capucha. Compre una para su hijo y para usted y muestre el Espíritu Escolar de   Diggs Latham.
• There will be a reception on Monday to honor our Teacher of the Year, Stephen Friel.  He is an excellent teacher and we are very proud of him.
• El lunes habrá una recepción en honor de nuestro Maestro del Año, Stephen Friel. Él es un excelente maestro y nos sentimos orgullos de él.
• WE NEED YOU! Our school system is holding a special Bully Prevention Event at Joel Coliseum this Saturday at 8:30 am.  We need a team of students and teachers and staff to represent Diggs-Latham.  There will be a Bully Free Prevention Walk around the coliseum and then a speaker inside.  We need to have a good show of support so come on out. Please wear orange.  Mrs. Gordon is making a banner with Diggs-Latham on it so come show your support for our team!!!!  You will need to provide your own transportation.  See you Saturday morning at Joel  Coliseum at 8:30.  The event will only last an hour or so.
• !LOS NECESITAMOS! El sistema escolar está patrocinando un Evento de Prevención contra el Acoso Escolar (Bullying) en el Joel Coliseum este sábado 13 de octubre a las 8.30 am. Necesitamos un equipo de estudiantes, profesores y personal que represente a Diggs Latham. Habrá una Caminata de No al Acoso Escolar alrededor del coliseo y luego un orador. Necesitamos tener un buen equipo que nos represente. Por favor usen color anaranjado. La Sra. Gordon está haciendo una pancarta de Diggs Latham. ¡!!Asista y muestre su apoyo  a nuestro equipo!!! Usted tendrá que usar su propio transporte. Nos vemos el sábado a las 8.30 en el Joel Coliseum.

Annual Parent Information Title I Night and PTA was September 20, 2012

We had a good turn out at our Title I Parent Night.  All families that came were treated to a surprise bag full of groceries courtesy of the Junior Women's League.  We are very grateful to them.  We discussed the meaning of Title I and Parent Involvement. We talked about the Parent Compact and the importance of parental involvement and partnership.  We need for you to be involved. Please join PTA.

Tuvimos una buena asistencia a nuestra reunión de Padres Título I. Todas las familias asistentes recibieron una bolsa llena de comestibles que recibimos de la Junior Women's League. Les estamos muy agradecidos. LEP Parent Meeting on September 26, 2012 from 5:30-6:30

Curriculum Night will be October 4th (Pre-K-5) 6:00-7:00.

FALL FESTIVAL/Multi-Cultural Night will be from 6-8:00 on Friday, October 12. Come dressed in your favorite multi-cultural outfit!  Wake Forest School of Medicine will be here with a booth so you can sign up to take advantage of their partnership with us to help with Science Fair Projects!

Estimados Padres! Hemos creado este blog para mantenerlos informados de todos los eventos y sucesos en Diggs-Latham. Nuestro deseo es que ustedes lo utilicen. DASH FOR CASH FUN RUN-We had a wonderful time on Saturday as 25-30 of our students and their families participated in a Fun Run to benefit the Trinity Center.  Our students registration fees were paid for the the generous donations from Green Street Church.  Our kids participated in a run, cookout and fun games.  They were then transported downtown to watch the Dash Baseball Game.  Cash prizes were given to the school who had the most paid entrants.  Diggs-Latham won First Prize, $1200. for our school.  I am so proud of the students who participated.  Thank you also to Ms. Frazier, Ms. Studevent and Mrs. Martinez who helped with the organization and chaperoning during the event.

DASH FOR CASH FUN RUN – Tuvimos un rato maravilloso el sábado, ya que entre 25 y 30 de nuestros estudiantes y sus familias participaron en una Carrera a beneficio del Trinity Center. El valor de la participación de nuestros estudiantes fue pagado por la generosa donación de la Iglesia Green Street. Nuestros niños participaron en una carrera, en la comida al aire libre y en juegos divertidos. Después ellos fueron llevados al centro de la ciudad  a ver un Juego de Béisbol Dash. Se dieron premios en efectivo a la escuela que tuviera más participantes. Diggs-Latham se ganó el Primer Premio de $1200 para nuestra escuela .Me siento muy orgullosa de los estudiantes que participaron. Gracias también a la Sta. Frazier, a la Sta. Studevent y a la Sra. Martínez, quienes ayudaron con la organización y el  acompañamiento durante el evento.

READING-Parents, it is so very important that ALL of our children are reading every night.  Please model good reading habits and encourage your children to read.  Teachers will be sending home take home readers as the year progresses.

LECTURA: Padres, es muy importante que TODOS nuestros niños lean todas las noches. Por favor enséñenles buenos hábitos de lectura y animen a los niños para que lean. Los maestros les enviaran lecturas  para la  casa a medida que el año avanza.

Parking-Please be sure to park legally and do not block anyone in when picking up and dropping off students.  Students should be dropped off at the curb and not allowed to walk through the parking lot.  It is very dangerous!  We also need your help in not filling up cafeteria tables in the morning.  We need all available seats for children.  Our enrollment has grown to over 500.  Please drop your child at breakfast and gives kisses and hugs and say goodbye.  Thank you, this will help us to get kids to class on time.
We truly thank you for your help in solving this on-going problem.

Estacionamiento -Por favor asegúrense de estacionar correctamente y de no bloquear a nadie cuando esta trayendo o recogiendo a los estudiantes. Los estudiantes deberán ser dejados en la curva y no se les debe permitir caminar por el estacionamiento.  !Es muy peligroso! 
También necesitamos su ayuda para que no llenen las mesas de la cafetería por la mañana.  El número de matriculados ha crecido casi a 500 y necesitamos todas las sillas para los niños. Por favor dejen a sus niños desayunando, denles besos y abrazos y díganles adiós. Gracias. Esto nos ayudará a que los estudiantes esté en clase a tiempo. 
Realmente les agradecemos su ayuda para resolver este problema que se nos está presentando.
