Welcome To A Brand New Year at Diggs-Latham 2014-2015

Dear Parents:  

Thank you for a great start to a brand new year. Our Open House Attendance was incredible and the best since I have been here.  I am very proud to be starting my Fourth Year with you. Time flies. It has been my pleasure getting to know your students and not only building mutual trust with them but you as well!  Our community support has also been incredible and we are very proud of the relationships we have built and are sustaining.  This blog is just another way to communicate with you.  We want you involved and engaged in your children's education.  We need you to ask questions, meet with teachers and participate in Curriculum Nights and performances throughout the year.  Research shows that parents who are involved help to produce students who show higher achievement.  I am always available if you have questions or concerns as is my support team of Curriculum Coordinators, Home School Coordinator, Nurse, Social worker, Guidance Counselor, Parent Involvement Coordinator and of course our wonderful AP, Dr. Frazier.  You can reach us all at 703-4102.

Bienvenidos a Nuevo año escolar 2014-2015 en Diggs-Latham 

Estimados padres:

Gracias por el magnífico comienzo para este Nuevo año.  La participación a la "Open House" fue increíble y la mejor desde que he estado aquí. Estoy muy orgullosa de empezar mi cuarto año con ustedes. El tiempo vuela.  Ha sido un gusto llegar a conocer a sus estudiantes y no solo establecer confianza mutua  con ellos sino también con ustedes!!!  El apoyo de la comunidad ha sido increíble y estamos muy orgullosos de las relaciones que hemos establecido y podido mantener  en de la comunidad. El “blog” es otra manera de comunicarme con ustedes. Queremos que ustedes estén envueltos y que sean parte activa en la educación de sus hijos. Necesitamos que hagan preguntas, que se reúnan con los maestros, participen en la noches de currículo y de presentaciones durante el año escolar.  Estudios muestran que cuando los  padres participan activamente en la educación de sus hijos esto ayuda a producir estudiantes que muestran un nivel de logros más alto.   Siempre estoy disponible si tienen preguntas o preocupaciones como también está mi equipo de apoyo de coordinadores de currículo, coordinador de escuela-casa, enfermera, la trabajadora social, el consejero, coordinador de participación de los padres, y por su puesto nuestra maravillosa AP Dr Frazier.  Pueden llamarnos al 703-4102.

New Calendars:

In order to keep you up to date with school events, we will be sending you a monthly calendar with important events. We hope you find it useful.  It is just one more way to communicate with you.  We will also continue to send out phone alerts. Please listen to them, as they are important.

Para poder mantenerlos al orden del día con los eventos de la escuela, vamos a enviar un calendario cada mes con los eventos importantes.  Esperamos que estos calendarios sean útiles para ustedes. Early Release Days:

• Our school district is starting something NEW this year.  There will be 6 Early Release Days this year.  Students will be dismissed 2 hours early. Please make transportation plans if your child is not a bus rider. Faculty and staff will be involved in strategic and targeted planning days that will help us obtain knowledge and review data to help your children succeed. This is our number one goal.  We appreciate your understanding and know that these days will benefit us all.  Just for future planning, I am going to give you the Early Release (2 hours early) Days so you can plan accordingly.
• FIRST Early Release Day is September 10th
• Early Release Day 2- October 1
• Early Release Day 3- October 22
• No Early Release in November or December or January
• Early Release Day 4- February 11
• Early Release Day 5- March 11
• Early Release Day 6- April 15

Despidos tempranos

·         Nuestro distracto escolar empezó algo nuevo este año  Este año tendremos 6 Despidos Tempranos.  Los estudiantes saldrán 2 horas más temprano. Los padres necesitan hacer arreglos  de transporte para los estudiantes que no usan el bus escolar.   La facultad y el personal estarán trabajando  en estrategias y  planeación que nos ayudaran a obtener conocimiento y revisar información para ayudar al éxito de los estudiantes. Esta es nuestra meta numero uno. Apreciamos que ustedes entienden y saben que estos días van a beneficiarnos a todos.   Para planear para el futuro, les voy a dar los días en que salimos más temprano (2 horas más temprano) para que puedan planear:

Septiembre 25 MUY IMPORTANTE ES NUESTRA PRIMERA REUNION DE TITLE 1 PADRES/PTA/ALFABETISMO NOCFHE DE CURRICULO.  UNA NOCHE MUY DIVERTIDA!  Necesitamos que todos estén presentes para votar los nuevos oficiales y para saber cómo ayudar a los estudiantes con el alfabetismo.  Por favor hagan lo posible para estar presentes.  Tambien necesitamos que se hagan miembros del PTA!!!  Por favor. Si necesitan un formulario, por favor pidan uno en la oficina :)  

Attendance-Please be sure, if at all possible, to schedule all doctor's appointments after school hours. Your children need to be here every minute from the first bell to the last!  Also, tardies and early pick ups are very disruptive.  If your children are changing the way they get home, please send a note to the the teacher and don't wait til the last minute to call. If we don't have a note or haven't heard from you, we will send them home their regular way. Our office is very busy and we can't guarantee that the message will get there at the very end of the day.  Please make sure that we always have updated addresses and phone numbers in case we need to reach you. Also if there are custody papers, please make sure we have the updated ones. This is for your child's safety. We appreciate your help with this. 

Asistencia- Por favor asegurasen, si es posible, de hacer todas las citas medicas a las horas después de la escuela.  Su niño necesita estar en la escuela cada minuto ¡desde que suena la campana hasta el final!  También las llegadas tardes y las recogidas tempranas son una gran distracción.   Si hay cambios en la manera que su niño va de la escuela a la casa, por favor manden una nota a la maestra y no esperen a la última hora para llamar. Nuestra oficina se mantiene muy ocupada y les podemos garantizar que el mensaje llegara al último momento.  Por favor asegúrense de que tenemos direcciones y numero de teléfonos corrientes en caso de que necesitemos llamarlos. En el caso de papeles de custodias, asegúrense de que tenemos las mas resientes.  Esto es para la seguridad de sus niños.  Apreciamos su ayuda. 

New Faces Around Diggs-Latham

As you have probably noticed, we have a lot of new faces around school.  Our new faculty and staff members are incredible, so I encourage you to introduce yourselves and get to know them all.  We certainly will miss our faculty that left but they all have bright futures ahead of them.  More about our new staff in the next blog.

Caras nuevas en  Diggs-Latham

Como se habrá dado cuenta tenemos muchas caras nuevas en la escuela. Nuestras nuevos miembros de la facultad and el personal son increíbles, entonces les animo a que se presenten ustedes mismos y lleguen a conocerlos a todos. Por supuesto que echaremos de menos a la facultad y el personal que se fueron pero sabemos que tendrán futuros brillantes.  Mas sobre los nuevos miembros de la facultad y el personal en el próximo blog.

A Note from Mrs. Cannon:  It is my calling and my mission to keep your children safe and to make sure that they become learners with character, drive and determination. We will challenge them and have high expectations, therefore we need your support. I pledge to involve you and communicate with you. Our faculty and staff are the best anywhere and they work tirelessly for your children. Many of them are here late in the evenings and even on weekends. I encourage you to set up conferences throughout the year and ask them questions about your child's progress. We can always provide a translator if needed.  Don't be shy. You need to be involved. It will take ALL of us to improve academic achievement. Please be engaged.  Ask your children about what they did and don't take "nothing" for an answer. Keep digging.  Have your children READ every night.  They will have homework every night so don't let them tell you they don't unless it a holiday, etc...Get your little ones involved with books so that they are ready to start pre-K.  We are a TEAM and we will be successful.  I am proud to be the Principal of Diggs-Latham!

Una nota de  Mrs. Cannon: Es mi llamado y mi misión mantener sus niños seguros y asegurarme de que se conviertan en aprendedores con carácter, ganas y determinación.  Nosotros vamos a retarlos y a tener grandes expectativas, de todas maneras necesitamos su  apoyo. Prometo que los voy a involucrar y me voy a comunicar con ustedes. Nuestra facultad y personal son los mejores y trabajan sin descansar por sus niños. Muchos de ellos permanecen aquí por las tardes y los fines de semana.  Yo los animo a que hagan citas con las maestros para tener conferencias durante el año escolar para que puedan hace preguntas sobre los progresos de sus hijos.   Siempre dopemos proveer alguien que pueda traducir, si se necesita.  No se intimide.  Usted necesita participar.  TODOS  necesitamos trabajar  juntos para lograr el mejoramiento en los logros académicos. Por favor sea un participante activo. Pregúntele a su niño que hicieron durante el día; y no se contente con la respuesta “nada”  Siga preguntándole.  Asegúrese que su niño LEE  todas las tardes.  Los estudiantes tendrán tareas todas las tardes entonces no deje que le digan que no hay tarea a no ser que sea un día de fiesta, etc. Asegurasen de que sus niños más pequeños tengan oportunidades de ver y leer libros para que estén listos para Pre-K.  Somos un EQUIPO y tendremos éxito.  Estoy orgullosa de ser la rectora de Diggs-Latham!   

Spring Has Sprung! Llega la Primavera!

Dear Parents:

I hope that you are enjoying a wonderful Spring Break with your students.  School is back in session beginning Monday, April 7th and we have a lot of work ahead of us to make it through this school year.  I would like to thank you for being patient with us as we have gone through the process of installing our new security system.  It seems to be working well.  Thank you also for making sure that your students are here on-time everyday.  We value every second of instruction.

Espero que esten teniendo unas buenas vacaciones de primavera con sus estudiantes. La escuela esta de nuevo abierta el lunes 7 de aril y tenemos mucho trabajo por delante antes del fin del año escolar. Quisiera agradecerles por ser pacientes con nosotros en el proceso de instalar nuestro sistema de seguridad. Parece estar trabajando bien. Gracias también por asegurarse de que sus niños lleguen a tiempo todos los días. Nosotros valoramos cada segundo de instrucción.

We are off to a great start this year.

The end of quarter is January 17th.
Students in grades 3-5 are taking EOQ's (End of quarter test) and K-2 are also taking mid-year assessments.

READ TO ACHIEVE Initiative for 3rd grade began the week of January 13th.
Please make sure your child is reading at least 20-30 minutes every night!

Diggs-Latham will be holding math night on January 30th from 5:45-7:15. Please plan to attend!
We look forward to a fun night of learning new math games and stategies!

We are now into the 2nd quarter of the school year!

IT'S SCIENCE FAIR TIME! Students in grades third through fifth must complete a project as a part of their second quarter science grade. Students in grades kindergarten through second will complete them in class. Students may enter one of the following projects:

Es hora de la Feria de la Ciencia        Los estudiantes de tercero a quinto deben completar un proyecto como parte de su calificación de ciencias  del segundo periodo. Los niños de kindergarten a segundo, lo harán en clase. Los estudiantes pueden hacer uno de los siguientes proyectos:

• Experiment - a display and an explanation of an experiment, which follows the scientific method. Volcanoes will not be accepted.
Experimento – una muestra y explicación de un experimento, que siga el  método científico. No se aceptan Volcanes. 

• Invention - a working model, which solves a specific problem or makes a job easier to do. Parents are encouraged to guide students, but not build their project

 Inventos - un modelo que trabaje y resuelva un problema específico o facilite un trabajo.  Les pedimos a los padres que guíen a los estudiantes pero que no les hagan su proyecto. 

Remember, a good project is planned and developed over a period of time. Start planning now!

Welcome Diggs-Latham 2013

September 2013

Welcome Back !  If you are new to us, we are so happy you are a part of the Diggs-Latham Family.  I am thrilled that we have had such a great first week of school. Thank you all so much for making Back to School Night such a success.  We had a full house, just as it should be. As I toured classes on Friday, you would have thought we never left for the summer.  Your children were actively engaged in learning. There were smiles galore. They are happy to be back and so are we!

! Bienvenidos de regreso! Si ustedes son nuevos para nosotros, estamos muy contentos de que sean parte de la familia Diggs Latham.  Estoy feliz de que hayamos tenido una magnífica primera semana de escuela. Muchísimas gracias a todos por hacer de la Noche de Regreso a la Escuela un éxito. Tuvimos la casa llena, como debía ser. Al visitar las clases el viernes, pensaba que parecía que nunca hubiéramos salido para el verano. Sus niños estaban ocupados activamente en aprender. Había muchas sonrisas. !Ellos  están contentos de estar de regreso y nosotros también!

What's New?  As you know, we had several retirements and a few of our teachers have moved up to positions in other schools in leadership roles.  We say good-bye to Ms. Hess and Mrs. Uhrig who is now the Media Coordinator at Mt. Tabor HS, Mrs. Friel who is a Star 3 District Facilitator and Mrs. Winsor-Porter who is a resource teacher at Cash ES.  Mrs. Sumner, Mrs. Binkley and Mrs. Hamilton have all retired. Mrs. Lizarazo is a Kindergarten teacher at Carter G. Woodson.  Mr. Sumners is teaching at the middle and high school levels. We will miss them all:)

¿Qué hay de Nuevo? Como ustedes saben, tuvimos varios maestros que se jubilaron y algunos otros que se fueron a otras escuelas en posiciones de liderazgo. Le decimos adiós a la Sta. Hess y a la Sra. Urigh, quien es ahora la Coordinadora de Medios en la escuela Mt Tabor HS, a la Sra. Friel, quien es ahora Facilitadora del Programa Star 3 y a la Sra. Windsor-Porter, quien es la maestra de recurso en la escuela Cash ES. Las Sras. Summer, Binkley y Hamilton se jubilaron. La Sra. Lizarazo es maestra de Kinder en la escuela Carter G. Woodson. El Sr. Summers está enseñando en la escuela media y secundaria. Los vamos a extrañar a todos.

Wake Forest School of Medicine will once again be mentoring our students for Science Fair Projects.  This is an incredible opportunity for you to get help with materials, supplies and expertise from an expert.  Wake Forest will match up students with science mentors who are doctors, scientists, professionals from all fields, teachers, etc...The fliers will be coming out soon in the Tuesday packets. You must register before you attend the first Saturday session October 12th. The last session will be November 23rd.  Let's take advantage of this program especially if your children are in grades 3/4/5.

La Escuela de Medicina de Wake Forest volverá a ser mentor de nuestros estudiantes para los Proyectos de la Feria de Ciencias. Esta es una oportunidad increíble para que ustedes puedan obtener ayuda con materiales, suministros y conocimientos de un experto. Wake Forest emparejará a los estudiantes con mentores que son médicos, científicos, profesionales de todos los campos, maestros, etc . Los volantes van a salir pronto en los paquetes del martes. READ TO ACHIEVE-Parents in Grades 3/4/5 received a flier explaining this program and its importance.  The Read to Achieve Program is part of the Excellent Public Schools Act which became law in 2012.  Its goal is to ensure that every student reads at or above grade level by the end of third grade.  There are several components to this program including a comprehensive plan, diagnostic reading assessment, re-administration of test/alternate test, summer reading camp.  We will discuss this program more in detail at Title I Parent Night and Curriculum Night. If you have questions, please call me.

Lastly, Please join PTA.  It is $5.00 membership and we need you.  PTA is working very hard to restructure and support our school in a number of ways. We also need you to volunteer. See Dr. Madison for details. We need volunteers for all kinds of jobs:)

LEER PARA LOGRAR-Los padres de estudiantes en los grados 3/4/5 recibieron un folleto que explica este programa y su importancia. El Programa Leer para Lograr es parte de la Legislación de Escuelas Públicas Excelentes que se convirtió en ley en 2012. Su objetivo es asegurarse de que cada estudiante lea en o por encima del nivel de su grado al final del tercer grado escolar. Hay varios componentes de este programa como un plan integral, la evaluación de diagnóstico de lectura, re-administración de test / prueba alternativa, el campamento de lectura de verano. Vamos a hablar sobre este programa con más detalle en la Noche de Padres Título I y en la Noche de Currículo. Si tienen alguna pregunta, por favor llámenme.

Por último, por favor afíliense a la PTA. Son $5,00 dólares por miembro y los necesitamos. La PTA está trabajando muy duro para reestructurar y apoyar a nuestra escuela de diferentes maneras. También necesitamos que sean voluntarios. Vean al Dr. Madison para más detalles. Necesitamos voluntarios para todo tipo de trabajo:)

It is hard to believe that the new school year is here.  We are excited about welcoming your students back at Open House this Thursday, August 22, 2013.  Please join the PTA!

Winding Down the Year

IT IS TESTING TIME

Our school will begin our last round of testing for the year on Monday May 13. The testing window for certain grades will not end until May 31st.

• The NC EXTEND 2 will be given to certain students. A letter will be sent home if your child will be tested.
• The 5th grade SCIENCE EOG will begin during the week of May 20.
• Beginning the week May 28th EOG, Reading and Math for grades 3,4,5 will begin.
• It is extremely important that children are brought to school on time.

Testing can be a very stressful time of year. Here are a few tips to support your child during this time: 

• Make sure your child has enough sleep
• Eats a healthy breakfast 
• Gets to school on time.
• Motivate your child to want to take a test. You can do this by reinforcing their efforts by focusing on the task not the grade
• Teach your child ways to relax through simple techniques such as deep breathing and meditation.
• Relaxation is a skill that requires learning and practice, so keep the relaxation practices short and simple. Make it a family activity, where everyone takes the time to breathe deeply: you can teach by example. Use the techniques yourself!

ES HORA DE LOS EXAMENES

El lunes 13 de mayo nuestra escuela comenzará la última ronda de exámenes del año.  Para algunos grados estos no terminarán sino hasta mayo 31.  

• Algunos estudiantes tendrán que presentar el examen NC EXTEND 2. Les enviaremos una carta si su hijo(a) va a ser examinado(a).  
• El Examen de Fin de Grado (EOG) de CIENCIAS para el 5o. grado se hará en la semana del 20 de mayo.
• En la semana del 28 de mayo se harán los EOG de Lectura, Escritura y Matemáticas para los grados 3, 4 y 5. 
• Es extremadamente importante que los niños lleguen a la escuela a tiempo.

La época de exámenes puede ser muy estresante. Aquí les damos unas claves para ayudar a sus niños durante esta época.

• Asegúrense de que sus niños duerman bien.
• Que tomen un buen desayuno.
• Que lleguen a la escuela a tiempo.
•  Motiven a sus hijos para que quieran tomar su examen. Ustedes pueden hacerlo recordándoles que se deben esforzar en concentrarse para la tarea no en la calificación.
•  Enséñenles a sus niños a relajarse usando la simple técnica de respirar profundo y meditar.

La relajación es una habilidad que requiere aprendizaje y práctica, así que mantengan esas prácticas cortas y sencillas.  Vuélvanlas una actividad familiar, donde todos se tomen un tiempo para respirar profundo y ustedes puede enseñarles con el ejemplo. Usen la técnica ustedes mismos.

 

Dressing for the Weather

No Flip Flops

As it begins to warm up, it is typical to dress for the weather. However, we would like to keep the children safe and dressed appropriately for school.
REMEMBER:

• NO Flip Flops - children fall over them while running and playing.
• NO short shorts or skirts - do the test** if the shorts/skirt is not as long as their arms when holding them down, it is too short to wear to school.
• NO spaghetti straps/halter tops

Vistiéndose para el Clima

Cuando comienza a calentar, es típico vestirse para el clima.  Sin embargo,  nos gustaría mantener a los niños seguros y vestidos apropiadamente para la escuela.  

RECUERDEN:

· NO Flip Flops –si las usan, los niños se caen cuando juegan y corren.

· NO shorts ni faldas muy cortos  - haga la prueba** si el short o la falda no son más largos que los brazos cuando los deja caer, entonces son muy cortos para usar en la escuela.

· NO blusas de tirantes o sin espalda

May 6th - Monday wear red to show love for your teachers

 May 7th - Tuesday wear your favorite color and share your favorite candy bar/snack with 

                                             your teacher

May 8th - Wednesday wear blue and share a quote to inspire your teacher

May 9th - Thursday wear green and bring/make a flower for your teacher

May 10th - Friday wear orange to tell your teacher "Orange you glad I'm in your class!"

Semana de Agradecimiento al Maestro  Mayo 6-10  

Mayo 6 – lunes Usar rojo para mostrar el amor a sus maestros  

Mayo 7 – martes Usar su color favorito y compartir su barra/merienda favorita con su maestro.                                             

Mayo 8 - miércoles usar azul y compartir un pensamiento para inspirar a su maestro.

Mayo 9 - jueves usar verde  y traer/hacer una flor para su maestro.

Mayo 10 – viernes usar anaranjado para decirle a su maestro "No estás contento de que esté en tu clase?"

Diggs-Latham: Dancing Through the Decades

Third grade will be putting on a production entitled "Dancing Through the Decades". This will take place on Thursday May 9th at 7:00pm. They have been working very hard, so please come out and support their efforts!!!!

    ***Parents of 3rd grade students should have received a letter about what to wear. Please contact Ms.  

                 Stevenson (dance instructor) if you have not received a letter.***

Diggs-Latham: Dancing Through the Decades

Los estudiantes del 3er grado tendrán una producción titulada "Dancing Through the Decades"(Bailando a través de las Décadas). Esto tendrá lugar el jueves 9 de mayo a las 7:00pm. Ellos han trabajado muy duro, así que por favor vengan y apoyen sus esfuerzos!!!!

    ***Los Padres de los estudiantes del 3er grado deben haber recibido una carta  sobre lo que deben usar ese día. Por favor llamar a la Sta. Stevenson (instructora danza) si no han recibido la carta.***
