It is hard to believe that the new school year is here.  We are excited about welcoming your students back at Open House this Thursday, August 22, 2013.  Please join the PTA!

Winding Down the Year

IT IS TESTING TIME

Our school will begin our last round of testing for the year on Monday May 13. The testing window for certain grades will not end until May 31st.

• The NC EXTEND 2 will be given to certain students. A letter will be sent home if your child will be tested.
• The 5th grade SCIENCE EOG will begin during the week of May 20.
• Beginning the week May 28th EOG, Reading and Math for grades 3,4,5 will begin.
• It is extremely important that children are brought to school on time.

Testing can be a very stressful time of year. Here are a few tips to support your child during this time: 

• Make sure your child has enough sleep
• Eats a healthy breakfast 
• Gets to school on time.
• Motivate your child to want to take a test. You can do this by reinforcing their efforts by focusing on the task not the grade
• Teach your child ways to relax through simple techniques such as deep breathing and meditation.
• Relaxation is a skill that requires learning and practice, so keep the relaxation practices short and simple. Make it a family activity, where everyone takes the time to breathe deeply: you can teach by example. Use the techniques yourself!

ES HORA DE LOS EXAMENES

El lunes 13 de mayo nuestra escuela comenzará la última ronda de exámenes del año.  Para algunos grados estos no terminarán sino hasta mayo 31.  

• Algunos estudiantes tendrán que presentar el examen NC EXTEND 2. Les enviaremos una carta si su hijo(a) va a ser examinado(a).  
• El Examen de Fin de Grado (EOG) de CIENCIAS para el 5o. grado se hará en la semana del 20 de mayo.
• En la semana del 28 de mayo se harán los EOG de Lectura, Escritura y Matemáticas para los grados 3, 4 y 5. 
• Es extremadamente importante que los niños lleguen a la escuela a tiempo.

La época de exámenes puede ser muy estresante. Aquí les damos unas claves para ayudar a sus niños durante esta época.

• Asegúrense de que sus niños duerman bien.
• Que tomen un buen desayuno.
• Que lleguen a la escuela a tiempo.
•  Motiven a sus hijos para que quieran tomar su examen. Ustedes pueden hacerlo recordándoles que se deben esforzar en concentrarse para la tarea no en la calificación.
•  Enséñenles a sus niños a relajarse usando la simple técnica de respirar profundo y meditar.

La relajación es una habilidad que requiere aprendizaje y práctica, así que mantengan esas prácticas cortas y sencillas.  Vuélvanlas una actividad familiar, donde todos se tomen un tiempo para respirar profundo y ustedes puede enseñarles con el ejemplo. Usen la técnica ustedes mismos.

 

Dressing for the Weather

No Flip Flops

As it begins to warm up, it is typical to dress for the weather. However, we would like to keep the children safe and dressed appropriately for school.
REMEMBER:

• NO Flip Flops - children fall over them while running and playing.
• NO short shorts or skirts - do the test** if the shorts/skirt is not as long as their arms when holding them down, it is too short to wear to school.
• NO spaghetti straps/halter tops

Vistiéndose para el Clima

Cuando comienza a calentar, es típico vestirse para el clima.  Sin embargo,  nos gustaría mantener a los niños seguros y vestidos apropiadamente para la escuela.  

RECUERDEN:

· NO Flip Flops –si las usan, los niños se caen cuando juegan y corren.

· NO shorts ni faldas muy cortos  - haga la prueba** si el short o la falda no son más largos que los brazos cuando los deja caer, entonces son muy cortos para usar en la escuela.

· NO blusas de tirantes o sin espalda

Diggs-Latham: Dancing Through the Decades

Third grade will be putting on a production entitled "Dancing Through the Decades". This will take place on Thursday May 9th at 7:00pm. They have been working very hard, so please come out and support their efforts!!!!

    ***Parents of 3rd grade students should have received a letter about what to wear. Please contact Ms.  

                 Stevenson (dance instructor) if you have not received a letter.***

Diggs-Latham: Dancing Through the Decades

Los estudiantes del 3er grado tendrán una producción titulada "Dancing Through the Decades"(Bailando a través de las Décadas). Esto tendrá lugar el jueves 9 de mayo a las 7:00pm. Ellos han trabajado muy duro, así que por favor vengan y apoyen sus esfuerzos!!!!

Bus Driver Appreciation Week begins the week of March 18th.

La semana de Agradecimiento al Conductor del Bus comienza el 18 de marzo.

  If your child rides the bus, please talk to your children about the importance of their bus driver. We honor them for keeping the children safe as they drive them to and from school. We honor those drivers that open the door with a smile and drop them off with a good-bye.

Progress reports go home on Tuesday, March 19th.

Si su niño utiliza el bus, por favor háblele sobre la importancia del conductor de su bus. Nosotros los honramos por mantener seguros a los niños cuando los llevan hacia y desde la escuela. Honramos los conductores que abren la puerta con una sonrisa y los despiden con un adiós. Los informes de progreso irán a casa el martes 19 de marzo.

End of Quarter Testing will start on Friday, March 22nd.

Los exámenes de Fin de Periodo comienzan el viernes 22 de marzo. 

Students and teachers have been working so hard for the past weeks.passed the half-mark for school. We are getting closer to the end of the school year as each day passes.
    As the quarter comes to an end, please take the time to contact your child's teacher for a conference if you have any concerns.

Los estudiantes y los maestros han estado trabajando muy duro en las semanas pasadas. Hemos llegado y pasado la mitad del año escolar y cada día que pasa nos estamos acercando más al fin del mismo. Spring Break begins on Thursday, March 28th.

Happy New Year!   !Feliz Año Nuevo!

As we begin the new year of 2013, we will be focusing on safety and increasing academic achievement.  We thank you for your support and hope that you will continue to be involved.  It is so important as we are a "family".

Al comenzar el nuevo año 2013, nos concentraremos en seguridad y en mejorar el rendimiento académico. Les agradezco su ayuda y espero que ustedes continúen participando. Es muy importante ya que somos una “familia.”

As a school, we are focusing on safety. Please be sure that if you are in the building to volunteer or visit, that you sign in and wear a badge. Children have been instructed to alert teachers or administration if they see an adult without a badge or sticker after morning announcements.

Como escuela nos estamos concentrando en seguridad. Por favor, si ustedes están en el edificio para ser voluntarios o para una visita, asegúrense de registrar su entrada y usar un gafete de identificación. Hemos instruido a los niños para que alerten a sus maestros si, después de los anuncios de la mañana,  ven a un adulto sin un gafete o un rótulo adhesivo que lo identifique.

Please note that school begins at 8:20 and ends at 2:50.  Teachers are instructing right up to the bell so please make every effort to get your children to school on time and not pick them up until the very end of the day unless absolutely necessary. If you picked your child up 10 minutes early for 1 week, they would be missing almost an hour of instruction. We thank you for your help with this.

Por favor noten que la escuela comienza a las 8.20 y termina a las 2:50. Los maestros están enseñando hasta la hora en que suena  el timbre, así que les pedimos hacer todo lo posible para que sus niños lleguen a la escuela a tiempo y no los recojan hasta que termine la jornada, a menos que sea absolutamente necesario. Si ustedes recogieron a sus niños 10 minutos antes por una semana, ellos habrían perdido casi una hora de instrucción.  Les agradecemos por ayudarnos con esto.

We have been experiencing difficulty in the mornings and afternoons and at Y dismissal in the parking lot with people double parking and blocking people in. Please refrain from doing this. It is dangerous and almost impossible to find the owner of the car that is blocking another.  Safety first, please:)

Hemos tenido problemas en las mañanas, en las tardes y a la salida de la Y en el estacionamiento, porque las personas estacionan en doble fija y bloquean otros carros. Por favor no hagan esto. Es peligroso y es casi imposible encontrar el dueño del carro que está bloqueando al otro. Primero la Seguridad, por favor:)

As you know if you attended, our presentation of the Nutcracker was fabulous!!!  I am so very proud of the students and teachers as I know you are. The Arts team did an outstanding job with the music, dance and drama. The children were just outstanding and I was so impressed by their dedication.

Si ustedes asistieron, ya lo saben. Nuestra presentación de El Cascanueces fue fabulosa!!! Estoy muy orgullosa de los estudiantes y los profesores y supongo que ustedes también lo están. El equipo de Arte hizo un trabajo excelente con la música, la danza y el drama. Los niños estuvieron maravillosos y quedé muy impresionada con su dedicación.

The Magnet Fair was held at Benton Convention Center on January 5th.  Again, our students presentation was awesome.  We recruited many families for tours and we have been very busy showing off our great school.

La Feria de escuelas Magnet fue el 5 de enero en el Centro de Convenciones Benton. De nuevo, la presentación de nuestros estudiantes fue maravillosa. Reclutamos familias para que nos visitaran y hemos estado muy ocupados mostrando nuestra gran escuela.

Zumba-We are so excited! our 4th and 5th graders will travel to the Benton Convention Center on Friday, February 1st to join with other district elementary schools to attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records record for the largest student Zumba class. Kids will Zumba for 30 minutes! More information will be sent home soon.

Zumba- !Estamos muy emocionados! Nuestros estudiantes de 4 y 5 grados irán al el Centro de Convenciones Benton el 1º. de febrero para unirse a otras escuelas elementales del distrito y tratar de romper un Record Mundial en el Libro Guiness para el mayor número de estudiantes haciendo Zumba. Los niños harán Zumba por 30 minutos! Enviaremos a casa más información.

Math Night is coming!!! Please plan on attending Math Night on Jan. 31st. It will be a night of discovery as you participate in Math Common Core curriculum activities. The classroom with the largest parent/guardian attendance from each grade level will be able to participate in "Dancing with the Principal"!  This will be 30 minutes of fun, fun, fun. We will dance to the music!  Math is important and so is knowing what your child is learning. Please come out and participate.

¡!!La Noche de Matemáticas ya viene!!! Por favor planeen asistir a la Noche de Matemáticas  el 31 de enero. Al participar en las actividades del Programa de Matemáticas tendrán una noche de descubrimientos. ¡La clase que tenga la mayor asistencia de padres por nivel de grado, podrá participar en “Bailando con la Directora”! Serán 30 minutos de diversión, diversión, diversión. Bailaremos al ritmo de la música! Matemáticas es importante y también saber que sus niños están aprendiendo. Por favor vengan y participen.

News for the week of December 17th, 2012

 

The Events at Sandy Hook Elementary Los Eventos en la Escuela Sandy Hook 

I cannot even begin to express my sadness, horror and grief over the events that took place in Ct. I can only imagine what those teachers and children must have gone through.  The faculty and staff were prepared and did all they could to protect their "babies" just as we would have.  My heart and prayers go out to the families, students, faculty and staff of Sandy Hook.  A dedicated and devoted Principal and brave courageous teachers lost their lives in a senseless act of evil.  I spent most of this weekend as I am sure many other principal's did thinking about our safety plans and fine-tuning them to see if there is anything more we can do to keep our kids safe.  Our Lock Down Drills are very important as are all our drills.  Dr. Martin has posted some resources on the WSFCS District page to offer tips on how to talk with children and offer support to all of us.  We do have counselors and resources available if you need them.

No se cómo comenzar a expresar mi tristeza, horror y dolor por los eventos que tuvieron lugar en Connecticut. Sólo puedo imaginar lo que esos maestros y niños tuvieron que pasar. Los profesores y empleados estaban  preparados e hicieron todo lo que pudieron para proteger  sus “bebés,” así como lo hubiéramos hecho nosotros. Mi corazón y mis oraciones están con  las familias, estudiantes, profesores y personal de Sandy Hook. Una directora dedicada,  llena de coraje y maestros  valientes murieron en este acto sin sentido. Yo estuve la mayor parte de mi fin de semana, como estoy segura lo estuvieron muchos otros Directores, pensando en los planes de seguridad y el cumplimiento de los mismos para ver si hay algo más que podamos hacer para mantener a los niños seguros. Nuestros simulacros de Confinamiento (cierre de la escuela)  son tan  importantes como los demás. El Dr. Martin ha puesto en la página web del Distrito unos artículos que nos  ofrecen claves sobre cómo hablar con los niños y ofrecerles ayuda. Nosotros tenemos consejeros  y  otros recursos disponibles si ustedes los necesitan.

We are very proud of Julissa and thank her for all of her contributions to Diggs-Latham Elementary School. She is a teacher leader and an advocate for all students. She truly cares about our students and their families.  Julissa will represent us at the District Level.  Congratulations are in order as well to our two other incredible nominees, Shakila Faqih and Brooke Hough.  These ladies are phenomenal teachers who are passionate about what they do.  They believe in children and work tirelessly to create environments in which their students flourish.  We are proud of all of these ladies.

Estamos muy orgullosos de Julissa y le agradecemos todas sus contribuciones a la escuela Diggs Latham Elementary. Ella es una maestra líder que aboga por todos los estudiantes y verdaderamente se preocupa por ellos  y por  sus familias. Julissa nos representará a nivel del Distrito. Felicitaciones también a las otras dos maestras nominadas, Shakila Faqih y Brooke Hough. Estas señoras son maestras fenomenales, apasionadas por lo que hacen. Mid-term Interim Reports Will be going home on Dec 11^th

Spelling Bee Contest        On Dec 3^rd, 4^th & 5^th we will have the contest in the classrooms.                         on Dec 14^th we will have the assembly in the Gym.

Concurso de Deletreo       El 3, 4 y 5 de diciembre el concurso se hará en cada salón de clase. El 14 de diciembre habrá una asamblea general en el gimnasio.

Holiday Musical               We will have The Nutcracker performance on Dec 13 at 7.00 pm.

                                      There will be a Dress Rehearsal at 1:30 pm

Musical de Invierno         Presentaremos El Cascanueces el 13 de diciembre a las 7 pm.

                                      Habrá un ensayo completo a la 1.30 pm

Please Note: The first 150 families at the 7.00 pm performance will get a ticket to turn in for a holiday surprise, donated by Home Moravian Church. One ticket per family.

Favor Notar: Las primeras 150 familias en la presentación de las 7 pm recibirán un boleto para cambiarlo por una sorpresa, donada por Home Moravian Church. Un boleto por familia.
